Trumping Benedict Arnold?

We are living in a time when the president of the United States is openly discussed as a security risk/threat to the country he leads. How did we get here? Why are Americans so caught in partisanship that we cannot deal with major threats to the planet, our country, and our society? I think the reason is we cannot seem to agree on the truth. We have networks and media companies that tailor content to the politics of the audience. Any capable enemy would use our internal conflicts against us; especially if we perceive major parts of reality differently. Our republic will thrive on a variety of viewpoints, but will collapse if we are separated from reality. History teaches us that The best attack is the one the target is not aware of – let’s decide to keep our republic, not be victims, and unite around the truth.

Bridges for security

We need to build bridges to increase the security at our borders, and within a our society. There is a lot of fear and good reason for it when you think of the criminality that is possible without control. Border control and security is really about this core idea of having control of who is in the country and why they are here. We all want control and not chaos; the question is how do we get it? I think being more intelligent about our borders and our neighboring countries will deliver greater security. Better relations and investments in our North American neighborhood is the most effective way to improve our security both economically and societal.

Consistency versus Chaos

Consistency comes from strong minds gathering facts, making choices and the discipline to follow up. Consistent leaders can work with others to plan a course of action and explain what they are doing to those who don’t understand. You can follow what consistent leaders do and easily understand what thinking underlies their decisions. Chaotic leaders don’t make sense and fail to communicate a vision that makes sense or is moored in truth or logic; typically because they are hiding important facts or are mentally unstable. As citizens we must demand consistency from our leaders, or watch our work (and the work of our ancestors) in this enterprise called the United States of America be destroyed.

Shoes are dropping

Skeletons coming out of the closet; shoes dropping; chickens coming home to roost. There comes a time when the facts come together and the party comes to an end for criminals, con-men, and liars. Everyone looks forward to these days when the truth shines bright and justice is done. Let’s strive to live life sticking with the truth, and treating others with respect – so that no one is waiting for chickens to come home on us.

Real leaders stick to the truth

How do you know a real leader from a pretender? Real leaders stick to the truth as they strive to move people towards a goal. Real leaders model the expected behaviors. Real leaders show humanity, caring, and concern because they actually believe it is important and the best way to live. When we believe in human leaders we have to be prepared to be let down because no one is perfect, but if we are getting a parade of lies something else is going on… not leadership.

Birds of a feather flock together

If many of your friends are in jail and under investigation then it would be reasonable for people to suspect you of similar behavior or at least knowing about it. If your friends are saying they are protecting you or your interests; then the suspicion would logically be more intense. As adults and citizens we have a duty to seek the truth and act on it. Ideology should never push us to support lies or liars. Jesus told us that the truth would set us free – we all need to follow his guidance and protect our republic by supporting the pursuit of truth.

Words make Meaning; and Matter

Words have impact on lives. We must all be mindful of the words that we speak, because we are putting our thoughts into the awareness of others. Our words represent us and are an attempt to influence others about our shared environment and experience. All of us should be intentional about spreading the truth and building a better world and helping others.

Words and Thoughts Precede Action

Words and thoughts have meaning and weight in our world.  Behavior is a result of thinking; we communicate our thinking through words.  Words create an environment and tone among people.  The Bible tells us that our words show what is in our hearts in abundance.  We all need to use our words to build up, and not tear down the people and institutions that are important.  We all need to remember that everyone is important, and should be treated with dignity and respect whenever possible.

What is a Norm?

There is a lot of discussion about norms in today’s media.  it is important for every citizen to make a decision about what is acceptable behavior and words in public.  We do not respect behavior from adults telling others to act in one way and then model different behavior.  Norms are behaviors that are typical and expected in a society.  We are all responsible to model what we expect, and to treat others the way that we expect to be treated.  Part of a citizen’s responsibility is to create societal conditions (and select leadership) that affirm the values and behaviors that we expect and want to pass on.
