Words and thoughts have meaning and weight in our world. Behavior is a result of thinking; we communicate our thinking through words. Words create an environment and tone among people. The Bible tells us that our words show what is in our hearts in abundance. We all need to use our words to build up, and not tear down the people and institutions that are important. We all need to remember that everyone is important, and should be treated with dignity and respect whenever possible.

There is a lot of discussion about norms in today’s media. it is important for every citizen to make a decision about what is acceptable behavior and words in public. We do not respect behavior from adults telling others to act in one way and then model different behavior. Norms are behaviors that are typical and expected in a society. We are all responsible to model what we expect, and to treat others the way that we expect to be treated. Part of a citizen’s responsibility is to create societal conditions (and select leadership) that affirm the values and behaviors that we expect and want to pass on.
Big decisions require knowledge and perspective of the past, present, and future. As each of us gets ready to vote we must think both short term, and long term. Collect data or inform yourself on what is going on right now; and what are the trends that will impact our futures. Trends require us to forecast the future based on the past and present trajectory of events in various categories. All of us need to consider the following trends: our impact on the climate of our planet, civility in our society, and our rights as citizens of this great country.
As intelligent living beings we should be in the habit of continuous learning. Once we have been situationally aware and learned we need to think about what we have experienced, and make a decision. Our decisions should allow us to improve our lives and the lives of those around (we are social beings). We must also own our decisions and make changes to improve where necessary. We should never feel that we need to hide decisions that impact the lives of others.
Remember to relax and take care of yourself. Life is quick and there is a lot to do, but you cannot get it done if you are not strong.
Leadership demands people who care about something larger than, or beyond themselves. We live in a time where citizens have to believe in something beyond themselves. We need to know our constitution and seek the truth. Not what we want to hear, but the truth. Seeking the truth is a habit, and a discipline. Seeking the truth when it comes to how people are treated demands that we apply the golden rule; that we have a framework beyond self-interest. Citizen leaders are going to lead our country to a better day. Politicians will not save us from ourselves. We are the change that we seek.
